How to solve handwritten math problems

Every math solver on the internet expects you to type the problem. Your problem is in a notebook, in your own handwriting, with a fraction bar that runs off the line and a 7 that could be a 1. Retyping it is where most people give up — or introduce the error they were trying to find.

Solving from handwritten notes is four steps:

  1. Capture one problem. Crop tight around a single problem, including the instruction line ("Solve for x", "Factor completely").
  2. Let the AI read it. Vision models handle cursive, slanted writing, and crossed-out corrections.
  3. Check the transcription. Confirm exponents, signs, and fraction scope before you trust anything below it.
  4. Work the steps. Each step names the rule it applies, so you can follow the reasoning rather than copy an answer.

How AI reads handwritten math

Handwritten math is harder than handwritten text, because in math position carries meaning. A digit written slightly raised is an exponent; the same digit on the baseline is a factor. A bar's length decides what sits in a numerator. Plain text OCR throws that layout away — a math reader has to keep it.

The characters that collide most often in real student handwriting:

  • x and × — variable vs multiplication. The most common misread in algebra.
  • 1, 7, and l — especially with a European crossed 1.
  • 0, O, θ, and ∅ — context decides: trig unit favours θ, arithmetic favours 0.
  • 2 and z, 5 and S, 9 and q.

Photo tips that actually change the result

Recognition quality depends far more on the photo than on how neat your handwriting is.

  • Light from the side. Your own shadow across the page is the number one cause of failed reads.
  • Shoot straight down. An angled photo skews exponents and subscripts — the positional information the model needs.
  • One problem per capture. A full page of ten problems gets you a solution to whichever one it latched onto.
  • Don't erase and rewrite in place. Ghosted pencil under fresh writing confuses recognition. Cross out and rewrite below.
  • Include the whole expression. A cropped integral bound or a missing dx changes the problem.

Handwritten calculus, geometry, and proofs

Integrals, derivatives, limits, and summations read reliably as long as the scope is visually clear — keep bounds and the differential inside the crop. Handwritten geometry works best when the diagram and the given statements are captured together, since the givens are half the problem. Checking handwritten work instead of solving it

Half of homework isn't "what's the answer" — it's "is what I already wrote correct". Photograph your own worked solution, all steps included, and ask for verification rather than a fresh answer. A step-level check tells you which line broke, which is the information that actually improves your next test score.
